Kdenlive for Advanced Video Editing

Editing videos inside of Kdenlive offers a robust experience. It's important to understand that the project does not start inside of the editing program; instead, it starts with something more conceptual like an idea. Once you have the idea, you might move on to maybe having a storyboard or a script, and then you'd gather the assets needed for the project. It doesn't have to be in that order, but typically it will start with an idea. While not touching all the tools, we'll be going over most things that you need to know to do a good edit.

Kdenlive is a versatile, free, and open-source video editing software designed for tasks ranging from basic cutting to complex, professional-level projects. It supports a wide range of audio and video formats and provides extensive tools for effects, transitions, and compositing.

Getting Started and Interface

Upon launching Kdenlive, you can familiarize yourself a little bit with the user interface. Understand that you have different panels, different sections here, which you can resize simply by left-clicking, holding, and dragging them. You have different tabs, and each tab is a different panel or window, giving you access to different features and different options. You can toggle these on and off by going to the menu bar inside of view and then checking or unchecking any of these checkboxes. Consider going inside of settings and taking a look. If you're having issues with icons or text, you can try going to the application style, pushing it to Breeze, and then for color scheme choosing Breeze dark. If your workspace is different, you can choose a preset like 'Editing' in the upper right corner. Each one of these options is a different workspace.

Project Setup and Importing

The next thing to do would be to set the parameters for our project. Do we want it to be 720p? Is it going to be 4K, 1080p, 30 frames, 24 frames, so on and so forth? To do that, we go inside of the menu bar inside of project and down to project settings. Inside of this window, we can choose the profile, like HD 1080p 30 frames per second. You also have the option to create custom profiles. Once we have our profile selected, press okay. Now we have our project set to the profile that we want, we can start importing our assets. There are several ways to import your assets, but one common way is drag and drop. Select everything and drag and drop it inside of the project bin. If you don't have the project pin open, go inside of the menu bar inside of view and make sure to check on Project bin.

Editing Workflow

Inside of the clip monitor, we're going to get a preview of the selected clip inside of the project bin. You can left-click, hold and drag to scrub through the footage. To start adding our clips to the timeline (these tracks down here), one way is simply to left-click, hold and drag it onto the timeline. If you scrub through the timeline, you're going to get a preview of what's on the timeline inside of the project monitor. Once we have our clip on the timeline, we can start editing. You can trim it, which is to left-click on one of the edges, hold and drag. You can also use the razor tool to cut clips. A possibly better way of adding clips is to use the clip monitor: identify where you want it to start, click 'set Zone in' (I key), find the end point, and click 'set zone out' (O key). Then, you can drag just the video or just the audio onto the timeline using the film strip or speaker icons respectively. To handle audio on existing clips, you can right-click and 'Ungroup Clips' or hold down Alt, left-click on the audio, and press delete.

Advanced Techniques

You can add transitions by selecting a clip and using 'Mix Clips' (U key) or by overlapping clips on different tracks and adding a composition, like 'Wipe' or 'Curtain', adjusting softness as needed. Effects like 'Transform' can be added (drag from the Effects tab or click the star icon) to resize, position, or even animate clips using keyframes within the Effects and Composition stack. You can change the interpolation of keyframes (e.g., to Smooth) for more dynamic animations. Titles are created via the 'Add Title Clip' option, offering text formatting, gradients, and shadows. For managing complex timelines, the 'Spacer' tool (N key) allows moving multiple clips together, either on all tracks or specific tracks (holding Ctrl).

Availability and Download

Kdenlive is completely free and open-source software. It is available for download for GNU/Linux, Windows, and macOS systems. You can download the version compatible with your system (installable or portable) directly from the official Kdenlive website.

Rendering Your Project

Once you're fully done, you can export your project by going inside of the menu bar, inside of project, down to render (or Ctrl+Enter). Choose the profile and codec you like to export as (e.g., MP4 H.264). You can tweak settings, enable parallel processing for potentially faster rendering (though it may cause artifacts rarely), add metadata, choose the output location, give it a name, and hit 'Render to File'. Kdenlive allows you to continue editing while a render is in progress and queue multiple render jobs.
